The Chinese baritone Buyan Li (born 1991 in Beijing) has been a permanent ensemble member of the Gerhart Hauptmann Theater Görlitz-Zittau since the 2023/24 season, where he regularly appears in opera and concert productions. Buyan Li has already performed more than twenty roles on opera and music theater stages. His roles include Marcello (La Bohème), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Harlekin (Ariadne auf Naxos), as well as title roles in contemporary music theater works. The specialist press praises his acting and vocal quality.

Buyan Li received his vocal training in Beijing and continued his studies in Germany. He completed his master’s degree with Prof. Rudolf Piernay and his concert exam in opera singing with Prof. Timothy Sharp at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim.

Concerts have taken him, among others, to the Stuttgart Philharmonic and the Baden-Baden Philharmonic.

He is a prizewinner of the 14th International Gabriela Beňačková Singing Competition and a scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Foundation.

Esme Wong, a Malaysian pianist originating from the island of Borneo, is an internationally active lied and chamber musician with a special focus on collaboration with singers. She has performed at renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall’s SongStudio with Renée Fleming, the Kulturpalast Dresden, and the Winspear Opera House in Dallas. She lives in Dresden and works as a répétiteur at the Landesbühnen Sachsen.

The Dallas Morning News described her as a “nimble collaborator … with vibrating urgency.”

Her vocal and opera-related engagements include collaborations with The Dallas Opera, Red River Lyric Opera, and Nashville Opera. As a lied pianist, she has worked with leading figures such as Graham Johnson, Martin Katz, Jake Heggie, and Libby Larsen. Concert appearances have taken her to events including the New York Festival of Song Gala, SongFest at the Colburn Conservatory, the Puccini Society of Dallas, and the Dresdner PalaisSommer. She has also been involved in world premieres of contemporary works, including compositions by Robert Beaser.

Her musical education is marked by an international perspective. Esme Wong studied at the United World College of the Adriatic in Italy, with a particular emphasis on chamber music and lied. There she was recognized for her musical achievements and worked under the guidance of members of the renowned Trio di Trieste, who profoundly influenced her artistic development. She subsequently earned a Master’s degree from the University of North Texas and a Bachelor’s degree from Luther College.
