Early in his career, Alexander Schmalcz performed with legendary singers such as Peter Schreier, Edita Gruberova, Grace Bumbry, and Anna Tomowa-Sintow. Among the singers of the current generation are Matthias Goerne, with whom he has a long-standing collaboration, as well as Daniel Behle, Konstantin Wolff, Stephan Loges, Inessa Galante, Eva Mei, Rachel Frenkel, and Chen Reiss. His chamber music partners include Céline Moinet, Albrecht Mayer, Dimitri Ashkenazy, and Tatiana Masurenko.
In addition to appearances at music festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Tanglewood Festival, the Prague Spring Festival, and the Schwetzingen Festival, this sought-after accompanist performs in major music centers in Europe, America, Japan, and Korea.
Concerts have taken him to venues including La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Amphitheatre of the Opéra Bastille, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Cologne Philharmonic Hall, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Wigmore Hall in London, the Seoul Arts Center, Tokyo Opera City Hall, and the KIOI Hall in Tokyo.
His extensive repertoire is documented by numerous CDs and recordings for radio and television stations such as BR, SWR, BBC, ORF, NHK, and Dutch Radio.
Commissioned by Matthias Goerne, Alexander Schmalcz orchestrated songs by Franz Schubert. These arrangements have since been performed successfully on several occasions, including by the Berlin Philharmonic, at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, at the Musikverein in Vienna (ORF Spring Concert of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra), and at the Frauenkirche in Dresden (Dresden Chamber Soloists).
Alexander Schmalcz gained his first musical experience and received his first piano lessons as a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor. He studied at the Dresden Academy of Music, then spent two years at the Utrecht Conservatoire, and completed his studies with Iain Burnside and Graham Johnson at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
Alexander Schmalcz is a professor at the Leipzig University of Music and Theatre and teaches masterclasses worldwide.
